That “offer” is a kick in the pants to victims of the ship wreck. Insulting. Come on Carnival Corporation! Where is your brain?  Did your P.R. firm come up with this one? Or, did executives at the top – do it themselves. Fire ‘em. Talk about exasperating the crisis response.

Sure, survivors will reportedly receive 100% discounts on that cruise debacle, but that offer is a no brainer, too. It’s a given.

Carnival should have offered survivors a lump sum payment for pain and suffering, as a peace-offering, an apology. Instead, lawyers are pursuing a class action lawsuit for monetary compensation.

Bad, bad, bad Public Relations. The response is a major slap in the face to survivors, and makes Carnival Corporation appear as cold, profit mongers, who are only thinking about their company’s financial bottom line rather than the human tragedy’s impact on lives. Certainly Carnival should have done more, something monetarily worthwhile. Their 30% discount P.R. response here will certainly further damage the company’s reputation i.e. its near future profits. Not a smart move Carnival. You get what you give, as someone once said.

(Gretna, NE)  – Vala’s Pumpkin Patch near Omaha offers fun, not only for the kids, but for adults too. 2010 update: Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday evenings after dark is the way to go. Not only do you pay a reduced entrance fee of $10.75 per person, but viewing the constantly improved pumpkin patch offerings in the evening is way better than during daylight. Makes sense.

The fun is on stage, too. Take comedian www.amazingarthur.com who holds shows throughout the day on stage near the entrance/exit. Oh my gosh. I giggled every time – he walked and talked. What a cutie pie, with the handsome chiseled jaw and dirty blond hair. Shucks. Yes, he seems absolutely amazing alright. He’s a hilarious man who peppers his jokes with a little bit of salt from the 80′s, great for our generation, and the ADHD-like magician variety of today. Moms may not leave their tree stump. Yes, there’s something other than pumpkins to look at. Sorry single moms. He’s got a ring on his finger. Tee hee.

Beyond Vala’s eye-candy, kids age 6 and up will enjoy the open air bouncy blob – a gigantic trampoline -like jumping blobs – but safer – which offer loads of fun. The free blob is a great way for children to release their energy. There’s one for tweens/teens too. Mom’s and dad’s may partake. Of course, you gotta take off your shoes. Everyone.

The simple things keep the young ones happy, like climbing on John Deere tractors, and the hay rack ride. These offerings, plus the gorgeous colors of fall, teaming with happy children’s faces, can create picture perfect moments for camera enthusiasts. Don’t forget it!

If you’re looking for a discounted pumpkin purchase - look elsewhere - pumpkin finds here are for entertainment purposes only. Still, it’s a gob of fun to get off the hayrack tractor ride & and comb the field for the first pumpkin that suits your fancy.  But mothers take note. This activity should be the last on your list – otherwise you’ll be lugging a heavy pumpkin around for the day.

For action enthusiasts, there’s a pumpkin cannon shoot demonstration. And, you can fling a giant sling shot. 10 balls for $3.00.

Moms and dads. FYI. Don’t expect a Disney World Adventure at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch with lights, camera and flash action. It’s low-key country, complete with down home fun. Sure, there’s roughly 2 hours of stuff to do and see. But be prepared. Some of the sights might bore such as the non-spooky haunted house, storybrook lane and similar scenes. Yawn. But, it’s fun to watch young ones enjoy these activities, including petting the farm animals. 

But hay….Everyone likes the train. Cost $2.50. The pig race kills time. Kinda interestering. If all else fails, you can munch on food like turkey legs, fried Succotash, or Barbecue. Blow some cash, why don’t you?! You can spend some dough if you shop here for Halloween supplies and other goods – gords, jellies, cider, scented candles and such.   

As for admission at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, it ain’t cheap, but not too costly either.

2010 Update: Vala’s pony rides at $5.00 a pop is outrageous. It should be priced at $1.00 per ride. Also, the food is okay. I’d rather arrive fed. The chicken ranch wrap was cold and tasteless, the chili not so good, and the kid’s meal does not offer soda. Their pizza was iffy. Overall, though, Vala’s was a lot of fun. They added a camel, the haunted houses are enjoyable for young children age 8 or so & adults. Nothing too scary. The main gift shop offers a lot of costumes & disappearing ink – which we purchased. Every kid needs to experiment with disappearing ink!

As a former journalist, I strongly favor an open justice system for citizen access. Yes, the public has a fundamental right to view a trial, have access and attend trials held in a public place, a right backed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Advocates claim courtroom cameras function as a checks and balances system, ensuring professionalism by attorneys and the judge. The same principle of keeping a critical eye on attorneys and the Court remains available to the public and reporters, by simply physically attending the proceedings and reporting on them. Live TV cameras are not necessary.

Additionally, the televised Anthony trail, clearly took away the judicial system’s dignity and decorum, evidenced in part by a courtroom gallery observer giving the bird to a Prosecutor, a mentally unstable observer shouting crazy talk, and fist fights from citizens fighting to get a courtroom seat. Fortunately, the jury only witnessed some of the inappropriate goings-on, was sequestered and was able to not be swayed by the media circus and their pundits’ across-the-board public conviction of Casey Anthony.

On a side note, I do believe the Anthony verdict was rendered fairly based on circumstantial “evidence,” the lack of “scientific evidence” and reasonable doubt that the Defense attorneys were able to show. The prosecution’s use of unaccepted “evidence,” such as the unproven validity of vehicle air samples showing human decomposition is one factor for their case’s demise – as was the state’s inability to determine Caylee’s cause of death -  not enough to convict. The only thing the prosecution did effectively prove is that Casey Anthony was a pathological liar.

Still, outside the courthouse, there’s another bad after effect of the televised trial and media circus reaction to the verdict. Combined, it has triggered a potentially dangerous situation for all parties. It’s being reported that after Casey Anthony’s murder acquittal, their family, the jurors, attorneys and perhaps the judge are suffering a backlash in the form of death threats. The grandparents, George, Cindy and Lee have reportedly gone in hiding. When the dust settles, will they be able to return to work and lead normal lives? Despite her acquittal, Casey, soon to be free, may never escape being recognized, likely preventing her too from finding gainful employment, and moving on with her life in a healthy way – safe from mentally unstable vigilantes who vehemently oppose the verdict thanks in part to the media ‘s sensational and biased opinions – triggered by live trial coverage.

Additionally, on Orlando Florida streets, there is a boiling pot of public emotions in the form of protests from citizens who don’t feel justice was served – ignited by a biased media and extensive live Trial coverage. Would some crazy person take it upon him or herself to murder Casey or her family? Certaintly, media bias triggered by Live TV cameras, are primarily to blame for the troubles all parties involved now face.

There is also the issue of catapulting attorneys and the Judge to celebrity status, a self-interested motive to increase their political and financial gain - an after effect of live courtroom cameras and combined media circus. Did each party play to the camera and forget their duty?

So many questions. But one answer is clear. Cameras in the courtroom, especially in sensational trials like this one, have a potential to create public chaos, ignite a life-threatening backlash to all parties, and could fail to give a defendant a fair trial. Live TV courtroom cameras must go for the good of all citizens.

Biography – On a personal note, Susan Stern enjoys a lot of activities: photography, guitar lessons, abstract art, fine-tuning her graphic design talents & inline skating. Topping the list of her favorite’s – keeping her young daughter healthy, happy & active! Says Susan, “Motherhood is my greatest joy in life!” Her career is also important.

Along with ten years in P.R. & Marketing, Susan offers a decade expertise in broadcast journalism & advertising production, primarily radio & TV including CBN Radio, Standard News Radio Network – Washington, D.C., Omaha’s KKAR-AM, KOIL-AM, ESPN-Radio 1620 AM, WOW-AM/FM, KVNO & WOWT, KTCB of Council Bluffs to name a few, both news & commercial aspects. Her work – has appeared on Nebraska Public Radio & CNN, too. She’s done countless radio and TV ads.

Susan even scored a small movie role as Cindy Lindstrom, a TV reporter in the Miramax/Disney film “Citizen Ruth”.
